Horses’ eyes are extremely delicate and this, combined with the horse’s dependence on the sense of sight, means that any sign of a potential eye problem should be treated immediately.

Equine Eye Care

The eyes are critical to the health, performance and well-being of your horse. Eye injuries can be devastating to a horse if they're not treated appropriately and with urgency.
Here at Countryside, we offer medical and surgical treatment options, as well as the latest drug therapies. Any damage to the horse's eye is considered an emergency. If your horse is experiencing any eye or vision problems, call us immediately at 770-788-7387.

What are signs that your horse may have an injured eye?

  • Redness
  • Excessive tearing
  • Heavy discharge from the eye
  • Squinting
  • Swelling around the eye
  • Cloudiness of the eye
If your horse is excessively rubbing their eye against objects, they may be trying to relieve pain or irritation. This rubbing can easily increase trauma to your horse's eye and quickly create a serious problem.

Administering treatment for eye trauma can be challenging and painful. Pictured is an SPL (subpalpebral lavage) system which is used to deliver medications directly into the eye area. A "bubble mask" is also used to further protect the eye.
Management of serious eye problems often require multiple treatments per day and may extend for several weeks.

We were very impressed with Dr. Carter and the thorough exam he conducted. We will definitely be referring friends for lameness issues.

Dr. Childers took care of my dogs issue with her allergies. She took the time to explain what the issue was and the remedy to correct the issue. She is always informative.

ALL the staff at Countryside and friendly, professional, and caring. We enjoy coming in for routine visits but really appreciate the care and concern we were given during an emergency situation on a Saturday! Lynnie Fuller is so knowledgeable and caring as all the medical and support staff are.
